Red Moon Cafe

Books, poetry, photography, jazz, Kansas & the Great Plains, Irish music, and teaching college English, with forays into other areas occasionally

Name: firstcitybook
Location: Leavenworth, Kansas, United States

I have multiple degrees in English and currently teach college writing online. I would most like to live on the other side of the 98th meridian where it would be possible to see a great distance when stepping outside the door. Forced to live where the jobs are, I currently reside in the well-watered East, a couple of hundred miles east of the 98th meridian, with my wife and son.

Links for Researching the Dead at Fort Leavenworth

Kansas History-- http://www.goodlandnet.com/history/kidder.htm
Everyone mentioned in the article except for Lt. Kidder is buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in a mass grave.

George Custer's Summer Campaign in Kansas--http://www.kshs.org/publicat/khq/1970/70_2_millbrook.htm
Charles Johnson, the deserter mentioned in the article at the above link and shot in the head by one of Custer's officers, is buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery but away from his unit. Custer suspected that Johnson and the other deserters were discouraged by the food, such as two-year-old hardtack. Perhaps Johnson had a moment of conscience and left for more noble reasons.

Fort Wallace-- http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/railton/roughingit/map/indbell.html
Dr. Bell describes the death of Charles Clark and Frederick Wyllyams, both of whom are buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Unfurling the Awning

Named for a cafe that once existed in Paris and referred to as La Lune Rouge in my French textbooks when I was studying French as an undergraduate, this blog will contain occasional posts about a variety of subjects, such as poetry, graduate school, finding work as a PhD, the American West, living in Kansas, growing up as a Navy brat, movies, and music (mostly jazz but occasionally traditional Irish music, such as Liz Carroll, Seamus Connolly, and Lunasa). Anyone passing by is welcome to sit under the awning on the sidewalk or to step inside. I'll offer a figurative cappuccino or, better yet, a latte topped with whipped cream once in a while.
